Product safety and durability

An aircraft’s maiden flight is a major step in its production life cycle. This also marks the start of a rigorous flight test programme. The whole process, which covers all manoeuvres, scenarios and procedures from pre-takeoff to landing, can take months to complete before delivery to a customer. Quality measurement results are essential.

Before the first flight, a number of ground tests are performed on components, sub-assemblies, prototypes and scale models. This assesses and refines the overall performance characteristics of the aircraft under typical operating conditions. Structural loads, vibrations and aeroelastic stability are examined. The results generated here affect the entire pre-operational test schedule and the safety of the flight test team.

The Environmental Test Suite from Brüel & Kjær provides a full range of environmental test tools for ground and in-flight testing. The integrated solutions – from shakers and environmental chambers that simulate operating conditions, to ruggedized transducers, data acquisition units and recorders, real-time and post-processing analysis programs, and flight test-certified sensors – provide the facilities for:

  • Acoustic fatigue testing both on prototypes and in-flight
  • Flight testing and monitoring
  • Vibration testing (including sine, random, sine-on-random, random-on-random, kurtosis) and field data replication
  • Shock and crash testing (classical shock and shock response spectrum)
