Durability testing of sub components
Vibration can be a limiting factor on the performance, precision, durability and comfort of an aircraft. Vibration cause serious problems, resulting in repairs, major overhauls, or in worst-case, catastrophe. Subjecting components or whole assemblies to shocks provides aerospace companies with data to assess the ability how the structure will stand up to real-life conditions before assembling the aircraft.
Durability testing may include:
- physical durability tests to evaluate the component’s life cycle
- fatigue tests to confirm fatigue life/ locate structural weaknesses
- environmental stress tests
- using simulation models to predict structural failures early in the design process
Often, aerospace design and development and quality assessment programmes will involve a mix of test methods to evaluate, validate and calibrate results.
